(Found) Far future. Research monkeys have evolved intelligence, tails are 'sense organs', the scientist ('sleeper') went into cryo sleep and died.

Hiya.

This has been driving me crazy. It's (maybe) a trilogy with a Brian Aldis/ Robert Silverberge far future vibe. I'm sure the titles had a seasonal motif. It starts in what turns out to be a research lab where the scientist went into some kind of cryosleep to get past a catastrophe but they mostly died, mostly.

The evolved monkeys are waiting for the 'sleeper' to wake up to lead them to the surface (I think). The sleepernever awaakes but our hero leads the troup to surface (I think). Earth is very different with evolved insects with intricate breathing tubes to allow them to get big co exist with other races (drawing a blank on them).

I read it in circa 1993- I went to uni and never read the third book (I think).

Damn, can't edit my gnarled up title :(

Is this ringing any bells?

Sorry can't help with the book -- it's not one I've read, and the only seasonal titles I can think of are the Helliconia books by Aldiss, which I've not read, but I'm sure don't have the evolved monkeys.

But I can help with this

I think I've sorted it out, but let me know if it's wrong. (Had to cut a word as too many characters for the title space.)

This reminded me of Silverberg’s At Winter’s End. I don’t remember how it started, but I do remember it was the far future, and the creatures tails were sense organs. I’m sure there were some giant insects involved too. I think there’s a sequel but I never read it.

That's it! I was sure I had looked at Silverberg's back catalogue :)

It had a sequel but the threequel did not happen, it seems :(

Thank you!

I have read At Winter's End. Long time ago. It was interesting, but I never saw any sequel. This was well before e-books and online-shopping, which makes looking for a book so much easier.
