Hi, I read this book in the 90’s - paperback & possibly from a library.
It was set aboard a vast generation starship millennia after blast-off, people start getting depressed & suicides start occurring. The society has a complex VR setup for entertainment & groups of kids & teenagers are captured & made to participate in a competition to win a quest. In it they encounter creatures mythological, extinct and invented. Parents etc can help them through the VR - it’s sort of Hunger Games in space with mythical creatures. TIA
