The series begins with a Phd. Oceanographer & his brother testing an experimental lidar underwater drone off the coast of Hawaii. They have their own ship because Doc got the USA out of a jam. The brother uses the ship to give tours to help pay the bills when Doc isn't using it. One day Doc looses the drone & has to go diving for it. He finds it in a "man made" cave & wakes up on an examination table after experiencing horrendous "night mares". It turns out that a starship's AI has tested him & deturmined he was a good person so he was made Captain so he could bypass the computer's protocols. He lets his brother in on the secret & they slowly introduce advanced technology. A slight tweak to his lidar unit causes an Admiral at the Tech Con to grab it & slap top secret on it. Meanwhile Doc's daughter (super genius) shows up for her time with dad (divorce stuff). Doc & his brother have these high tech alien gadgets that allows them to communicate with the ship & the daughter figures it out. So as the story continues they have to add more people & med bay offers some enticements to good people who lost everything to war (brother was one). They go on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship in order to fund their introduction of alien tech to the world.
NOTE: These are good people trying to do the right things. No outrageous foul language, no explisit sex, no graphic violence. The bad guys try to beat them, but they always win in the end.
Eventually they get an island to take them in. They build offshore city platforms and launch ships to build a space station. I read this series 2 years ago & I can't find it in my Audible or Kindle ebooks.

I've never read any of the Clive Cussler books, but I think he has oceanographers and such like in his novels. I don't know if he's ever gone into the SF aspects of it, but as a long shot, why don't you look at Cussler's books on Amazon and see what they suggest as "People who bought this also bought" to see if there's a connection to an SF book with similar themes.

No, sorry. Cussler was a favorite of my Dad's & me & he never touched sci fi or fantasy. Thank you for the thought though. Dirk Pitt of NUMA was one of my favorite characters & now his son is doing the crazy stuff while dad (Dirk) took over for the Admiral. Great spy/adventure stories if you're interested in that.
