Book or story reality as virtual reality

Read a book or short story a dozen or more years ago, from Dublin Public library, in Dublin Ohio. It was a mystery, set in not distant future, in which at the end (near last pages or paragraphs) the main character discovers that he is a character in a video game or computer simulation.
 
Unfortunately, there are quite a large number of stories that make use of this trope.

There's a decent chance that someone will be able to identify it if you can provide any additional details, no matter how trivial they might seem. Have a look at this handy guide for some suggestions that might jog your memory.
 
This is very strange, I'm reading a book right now with that exact same plot.
However it only came out at the start of this month!
