Another Not So Small Mammal Hobnobbing with Dinosaurs

It is more likely that these mammals were nocturnal and hid underground during the day. Some marsupials and flightless birds are still nocturnal, even though any giant predators they once had during the day are long extinct. The earliest dinosaurs, like lizards, could not regulate their body temperatures without the sun. Later, many smaller carnivores such as Velociraptor, as well as early birds and pterosaurs did become nocturnal.
 
Reminds me a lot of Thrinaxodon, featured in Walking with Dinosaurs, which came out of the Permian-Triassic extinction event as a key predator, and was credited with burrowing:
