it’s been decades. I think I would have read this in my early teens which makes it mid-late 80s, maybe at a stretch early 90s.
would have been a young adult book
The story was about a child (girl) who was suddenly orphaned. Parents worked in remote high altitude location and were isolated so she never saw other kids. Turns out her parents engineered her so she can survive at high altitudes, with low oxygen levels, maybe had webbed fingers and her skin was blue or green. She was ostracised by the other kids when enrolled at school. Vaguely remember her running away to live alone in the mountain tops at the end.
It’s bothered me for a long time that I can’t remember or find this story. Any help appreciated.
