June 2020 Reading Thread

My slow reading has slowed even further, and I've only managed two books this month.

I continued with Daniel Abraham's The Long Price Quartet with the fourth and final book The Price of Spring. As with the third book, the writing was fine, the plotting was fine, but I despised the main character, Otah, who is now Emperor of a dying land -- all its women are sterile -- and is negotiating a treaty with his former enemies the Galts who murdered thousands upon thousands of people, but who are also a dying race as their men are all sterile. Some interesting characters amongst the women couldn't make up for the heavy-handed lecturing.

But despite what I felt were its faults, I nonetheless enjoyed it far, far more than My Experiences in the Third World War a collection of SF-ish stories by Michael Moorcock, written between 1964 and 1990, and revised 2014. Stylistically all very different, but they all to me had the feeling of literary mood pieces, where there's no real plot or point, and the end of the story left me with a "And?" or just a "?"

20 days since my last post in this thread, and 32 more titles finished.

“Summerlost” by Ally Condie.
An engaging coming of age tale about a girl coming to terms with the loss of her father and brother and the changes those losses bring to the world around her.

“The Escape Artist” by Brad Meltzer.
Is Nola Brown dead? If not, why not. If not, who's body is it. A very good military thriller from Brad Meltzer.

"Spymaster," book 18 of the Scot Harvath series by Brad Thor.
"Backlash," book 19 of the Scot Harvath series by Brad Thor.
The two most recent from Brad Thor are definately the best in the series. The early books in the series I would recommend only to die hard political thriller fans. It's not until the last five or six books that the series really hits it's stride.

“The Demon Next Door” by Bryan Burrough.
The story of a little known serial killer from a small town in Texas.

“Lightless,” book 1 of the Lightless series by C. A. Higgens
“Supernova,” book 2 of the Lightless series by C. A. Higgens
The best way I can describe this series, at least so far, is Expanse light plus self aware AI. It doesn't have the same level of political intrigue, but it also moves at a quicker pace.

“84K” by Claire North
So far I've read three other books by Claire North and based on subject matter, thay could have been written by this different authors. The one constant has been the quality of her work and this one is no different. A scathing rebuke of unregulated free market capitalism.

“Under the Bright Lights,” book 1 of the Bayou Trilogy by Daniel Woodrell.
“Muscle for the Wing,” book 2 of the Bayou Trilogy by Daniel Woodrell.
“The Ones You Do,” book 3 of the Bayou Trilogy by Daniel Woodrell.
A bit meandering, but thouroughly entertaining thriller series about local crime and law enforcement in America's Bayou country. What this book truly highlights are the problems and consequences of extreme poverty.

“Bellman and Black” by Diane Setterfield.
This book was an immense surprise. I'd read one other by this author and while it wasn't bad, it wasn't terribly good either. This was a delightful Victorian(?) era drama of a man who loses nearly everything, builds up more than he had before, and realises in his last moments that he's really lost all.

“Curious Toys” by Elizabeth Hand.
A historical crime thriller about a fourteen-year-old girl who dresses like a boy who sees a man enter a ride with a young girl and exit the ride alone. She soon discovers the horrific truth the leads her to Henry Darger. Together they uncover murders no one even knew had happened.

“The Supernaturalist” by Eoin Colfer.
One of my all time faforites and a multiple time re-read. Young orphan Cosmo Hill, late of the Carissa Frayne Institute for Parentally Challenged Boys nearly dies while escaping, and sees something during the accident that nearly kills him that changes him forever, supernatural Parasites.

“Wishful Thinking,” book 1 of the How to Be the Best Damn Faery Godmother in the World (Or Die Trying) series by Helen Harper.
“Wish List,” book 2 of the How to Be the Best Damn Faery Godmother in the World (Or Die Trying) series by Helen Harper.
A really fun look at Faeries and especially Faery God-Mothers. Saffron Sawyer has wanted to be a Feary God-Mother her whole life, and now, newly promoted from 'Dope Faery' she's going to be the "Best Damn Faery Godmother in the World."
...If they let her.

“White Cat,” book 1 of the Curse Workers series by Holly Black.
“Red Glove,” book 2 of the Curse Workers series by Holly Black.
“Black Heart,” book 3 of the Curse Workers series by Holly Black.
Easily one of Holly Black's best works to date. The Curse Workers is a tale of murder, magic, mayhem, organized crime, and prep school.

"Echo Burning," Jack Reacher book 5 by Lee Child.
Another Jack Reacher book that's just good enough to keep me interested for one more book.

“LIFEL1K3,” book 1 of the Lifelike series by Jay Kristoff
“DEV1AT3,” book 2 of the Lifelike series by Jay Kristoff
One of the best you adult series I've ever read. 'X-men' meets 'I robot,' if they met on the American version of the desolate plains of 'Mad Max.' I am anxiously awaiting book three of the series!

“Terminal Alliance,” book 1 of the Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse series by Jim C. Hines
Earth has been wiped out by the zombie apocalypse and all that remains of humanity are the few thousands who have been reconstituted from the shambling creatures humanity has become. A bioweapon attack kills the crew of the Pufferfish, and reverts most of her custodial staff to their former, mindless, selves and leavs Mops and her team to clean up the mess. Keeping the ship clean is one thing, but flying it is something else all together.

“The Emperor of Nihon-Ja,” book 10 of the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan.
“The Lost Stories,” book 11 of the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan.
“The Royal Ranger,” book 12 of the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan.
“The Royal Ranger: The Red Fox Clan,” book 13 of the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan.
“The Royal Ranger: Duel at Araluen,” book 14 of the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan.
More tremendously fun Young adult fantasy! Think Robin Hood without the tired tropes.

“Calico Joe” by John Grisham
Grisham's other sports themed book. This novella about a star rookie and the pitcher who would end his career is a moving tale, even for people, like me, who really don't care for baseball. A story a tragedy and malice, and eventually, redemption.

“Stories of Your Life” by Ted Chiang
Wow, not sure how to describe this scattershot collection of short stories. some are decent, one is pretty good (the one Hollywood butchered to make "Arrival") and others are just plain aweful.

"Lords and Ladies," book 14 of the Discworld series by Terry Pratchet.

“Undivided,” book 4 of the Unwind Dystology by Neal Shusterman
Took me some time to work through this series. The writing is pretty good and the storytelling is good, but the suspension of disbelief over the idea that parents would choose to have their children 'unwound,' killed to feed the transplant industry that evolves after medical breakthroughs allow for rejectionless transplants. Still, there are decently nuanced characters who evolve over the couse of the series and several entwined stories that, if you can manage the suspension of disbelief, are quite good.

247 for the year, so far and still on pace for nearly 500 (496). If I don't quite make it to 500, I know what next year's goal will be. :D

Well, That was interesting! Gunship by JJ Snow is only available in the U.S. by an Amazon seller for $902.81 new, but there is a used copy for $1004.24. It only has one rating, and that rating is a 1 with one of the most devastating reviews I've ever read. And there was not even a blurb about the book. My guess it is a GB or Europe release only.

But I suspect that I'd like it because @dannymcg and I usually have similar tastes.

You can always use a VPN with servers in the UK to access amazon.co.uk. I had to do that to get the second and third books of the Low Town series by Daniel Polansky in electronic format from Hodder and Stoughton. To the best of my knowledge, they're still not available here. If you have a Kindle it may not work. Amazon's so picky about it (the main reason I'll never get a kindle for e-books). I've got a Kobo and the epub format worked fine.
