(Book search) Big spoiler: story is taking place on a copy of earth

Novel. Fairly recent. Sort of mystery/horror as you get a story of a protagonist being chased by terrifying monsters disguised as little children in the recent past. WW2? Paris? There are also mysterious forces who turn out to be people from current Earth who know it is a couple of hundred years later and have found a wormhole that leads from the real Earth to this copy, where people think it is the past. The journey by wormhole is rough? I think there are multiple perspective characters. It seems like aliens did it for their own purposes. Felt like an attempt at a series. Thought it was Alexander Jablokov, Ken Macleod, Neal Asher or Alastair Reynolds, but I don't believe the book is listed officially for any of them.
