I read the novel many years ago probably in the mid 70s and borrowed it from a library so probably hard cover.
The start of the book is about 2 scientist or marine biologists that discover increased bacteria or algea in the rising sea levels. They then reason that the earth is dying or changing and won't sustain human life much longer. As the story goes on they travel toward a place where there is apparently a spaceship departing earth. I remember they encountered Nazis along the way. Also I seam to recall that the title was only 1 word...
