I think it's fair to say that there are many underrated companions in Doctor Who, some of them get more attention then others and that's quite honestly a shame. I was wondering who all of think is the most under-appreciated companion. I personally think Martha is one of the more under-appreciated ones, there are plenty of great episodes during her run as The Doctor's companion that aren't talked about as much as episodes with other companions.

I have just started binge watching the series from the beginning. I only ever saw a few episodes when it was on it's initial run. I enjoyed what I saw, but intended to get the Blu-Ray and power disc my way through it. With all this time off on furlough, now is the ideal time.

I'm on series 4, so my impressions are limited really to Rose Tyler, Donna Noble and Martha Jones. Oh, and Sarah Jane Smith.

Rose had quite satisfactory story arc and a nice ending. Billy Piper was perfect, a
Donna's arc was very sad. I think her story made her my favourite companion so far. She had Chutzpah.
I adored Martha and I get the impression that we see more of her. She's tough and she's a fighter. Is she with Torchwood now?
It was wonderful seeing Sarah Jane Smith on screen and K-9 (who I loved as a child). Do any other classic companions make an appearance?

Martha is actually with UNIT

Re: companions.
are you talking about the relaunched Dr Who or the whole run starting in the 1960s?

I always liked Peri / Nicola Bryant, okay she did a lot of screaming and running up and down corridors but she had a sweetness about her that let the Doctor be a smart ass all teh time.

I remember seeing her in a training video at work, obviously Dr Who was a career peak.

Clara. I thought she was terrific and I don't understand why she receives so much hate
I think a lot of it had to do with the fact in a lot of ways, she became the focal point of the show. She wasn't portrayed as just a simple companion; she did Doctor level stuff. I tend to notice most criticisms of how the show operates focuses on how "girls" can't do the same thing the Doctor can.

I liked Duggan, I thought he would stay around longer. Also Turlough although I can’t remember why. (My actual faves were Jamie, Sarah Jane, Jo, Leela and the first Romana)

Oh and Mickey... “I’m the tin dog...” f ing classic, dunno if he was underrated (except by himself and the Doctor) though!

Leela was deifintely my most favourite companion. Jamie the Jacobite Highlander was also an interesting character, but the most underrated is probably Liz Shaw who was a strong, smart cynical woman who was as comparable in intelligence to the Doctor as any other human companion. She didn't even get a proper on-screen goodbye. As much as I love Jo Grant, it was a bit of a shame to replace Liz with a typical damsel-in-distress character.

As far as the new series goes, I agree that Martha hasn't gotten the love she deserves. Yes, her time on the show was overshadowed by Rose in many ways but during the season finale she was just awesomeness incarnate.
