One of t' wife's friends is trying to remember a series they read back in the 90s, about a boy who gets sent back in time to the American Civil War where they meet a bunch of mysterious observers and try not to die. When they finally return, they think they've been on a movie set the whole time, but the observers are still there. There's also commentary on the boy by the watchers between chapters.
This ringing any bells for anyone?
