I am looking for a story I read years ago. Scientists have opened a portal to another dimension. On the other side appears a quaint farm house in a pleasant setting with a mother and father and maybe 2 children. To keep the portal open while they study it, ice cubes are sent through. This way nothing pollutes the other dimensions. Finally someone steps through the portal and is immediately set upon and devoured by the family on the other side. The portal is shut down. Later the scientists are horrified to see ice cubes appearing out of thin air.
Does anyone recognize this story?

This sounds right up my alley, I'd love to read it.

It was adapted for television. the 2001 anthology tv series Nightvisions The episodes stared Bill Pullman. Ive never read the story but ive seen the tv adaptation.

Thank you for this memory Lazarus-zombie resuscitation.
Absolutely horrifying story that had faded to a few vague, apocryphal flashbacks.

I am searching unsuccessfully for a way to read this online.
Can you imagine? As if life didn't hold enough horrors, no, we gotta go digging. At least HPL is fun to read and feels unlikely: too far off to happen.

My search found a discussion on Bob Leman on this site.
These links don't get unearthed and revealed automatically, so here it is.

In the horror section. Appropriately so.
