I forget what the story was called, but I think it was written by H.L. Gold. It featured a shoe salesman who dreaded to alter his routines without quite knowing why. When he changed just one habit, the world exploded. That was it. I had been hoping for something far more clever.

Has anyone experienced a "flat" or unfulfilling ending in what you'd hoped was going to be a great story?

There's a whole class of short stories where it's clear the author just wants to introduce a longer work, like their upcoming novel. So rather than giving us a tight plot it gives us loads of worldbuilding instead.

Oh and I'd say Stephen King doesn't write short stories. He tends to write short novels and call them short stories. ;-)
