Short story about creating a race of accelerated time creatures

I remember a story about a scientist who engineers a race of creatures who live accelerated lifetimes. They live lives where a generation is only a few hours. They quickly evolve intelligence and their creator sets them tasks which would take humanity years to achieve but they solve in days.
The scientist is viewed as their "god" and they obey all instruction, including when he tells them to build an impenetrable shield, which they do and then the scientist realises that this means he can no longer communicate with them.
Then I can't remember how the story ends!

Any ideas what this might be?
