Space trilogy- sort of like star wars

The bad guy was kind of like Darth Vader just didn’t wear the outfit. He was secretly a religious man. He was after a teen age boy who suppose to be the galaxies savior. He had a flaming sword, like a light saber.
 
This made me think of Endymion by Dean Simmons. Probably not because the religious side is not secret (the Catholic Church is effectively the antagonist). And it's only two books. And I cannot recall a flaming sword, though the priests do bear the "cruciform" and our young protagonists Aenea and Endymion are pursued by a Father Captain - effectively a military priest.
