Just breaking.

A GOT stalwart but had a long and varied career before that.

I have no idea of this is true but I remember reading that the name for her character in 1960s series The Avengers came from the script having the unnamed female character simple marked in the margin as needing to have man appeal (which was shortened to m. appeal....which became Emma Peel).

She was reliably the best thing in anything she was in. Brilliant in the Avengers. The absolute star of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Great in Theatre of Blood. Stole every scene she was allowed near in Game of Thrones. An astonishing range, an enviable command of craft, intelligent, forthright, exceptional.

What a shame. 82 isn't a huge age these days, and she wasn't anything like retired. (She appeared in the new "All Creatures Great and Small" last night.)

Emma Peel. She made the role her own, the perfect balance of intelligence, humour, and physical prowess. Later imitators like Uma Thurman's bride never quite hit that sweet spot.

It wasn’t in the original press release but it’s in today’s paper that she had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

Always a great actress, many different roles, comedy to horror. She performed with impeccable style, always looking good and making those she worked with look good. m. appeal....which became Emma Peel is a real story. When she first started working on the Avengers show she found out she was getting paid less than a cameraman, she corrected that situation immediately.

So saddened to hear this.
I used to love The Avengers, would look forward to watching it on a Friday night on ITV.
Plus I was secretly in love with Emma Peel, one of the first strong and independent women characters, I think she rescued John Steed (Patrick Macnee) her partner as many times as he rescued her.
R.I.P. Dame Diana.
