So the book is about a boy who was raised by his mother people (apaches indians) on a alien planet. The boy trains a flying snake to be his steed. He leaves to get to know his father a space captain whoo has a shipmate who is a dwarf from a gravity planet. Please help me find this science fiction book

I may be way out but the name Andre Norton springs to mind, one of her very early works, 1960s or so?

"Beast Master" (the book, not the !#%&%$^@!@!$ movie of the same name) has an Indian (Apache maybe) who was a Beast Master in the interplanetary war... War's over, he's on a ?farming? planet with his beasts... He and a group of friends track a mystery and discover an alien installation (no aliens, IIRC). Well worth a read even if it's not the story you're looking for.

ps-- the movie company supposedly bought the movie rights to the book, but the only part of the book that was kept was the fact that Our Hero could talk to and see through his 'beast's' eyes. Aliens and spaceships was too complicated a plot, I guess!

Thanks for that, your words sound vaguely familiar so yes that sounds like the book and not one to annoy you but I enjoyed Beastmaster, it was a fun B movie just like Arnies Conan :)

..Apache...
Well! The Indian in The Beast Master was a Navajo. There was a series of books in the same universe:
  • The Beast Master (Harcourt, Brace, 1959)
  • Lord of Thunder (Harcourt, 1962)
  • Beast Master's Ark (Tor Books, 2002), by Norton and Lyn McConchie
  • Beast Master's Circus (Tor, 2004), Norton and McConchie
  • Beast Master's Quest (Tor, 2006), Norton (deceased) and McConchie
ps-- the movie was interesting... I thought they had just picked a similar/identical title... until I found out they actually had movie rights to the book!

Andre Norton also wrote "The Sioux Spaceman..." I suspect the plot is not quite the one you're looking for!
