Radiation affects human colonists of the solar system and makes men incapable of fathering daughters. The Spacers (?) Are forced to raid earth for resources unavailable in space including for young women to become forced brides (mawkis?).
Protagonist is a young man on his first raid who is tasked with kidnapping a woman. He succeeds but accidentally captures the young woman's brother as well, who is trying to protect his sister. The three young people discover how little they understand of each others' worlds in the midst of a major retaliatory attack on the colonists by earth forces.
Despite/because of their differences, the three are able to play a major role in brokering a peace in the war that otherwise threatens to destroy both sides.
