Pandemic novel

This one I read about 2000 in a jury room library, so late 20th Century. English.
The pandemic was a blood disease that killed everybody except:
1) People with sickle cell anemia or
2) Icelanders who put up a draconian quarantine immediately. A boat took the disease to their island but they isolated the outbreak, then another one in the middle of the island that somehow got there.
IIRC the pandemic was started by aliens who wanted to cut down the population prior to invasion.

Hi,

Don't know if this will help in your search, but sickle cell anemia is well known to be protective against malaria. Could your alien disease be some sort of malaria? I'm fairly sure I read a sci fi story long ago about alien mossies and disease.

I don't remember if they based it on malaria.
I do remember it went a little further than they wanted...they wanted to enslave humanity, not nearly annihilate it.
