OK, this will be my last for awhile, so I don't clog up the subforum.
I had a story in my reading class back in the Sixties. A boy finds an earthworm which is warm and which, to his surprise, can communicate with him telepathically (by a million million to one chance I have the strongest worm mind and you have the softest human head). The worm offers to become a mentor for the boy, promising to eventually guide him to the White House. The boy is tempted, but declines, realizing that he may be the POTUS but he would be taking orders from a worm (come to think of it, this might explain recent American politics). The introduction said the author wanted to spoof talking animal stories, There may have been other stories featuring this worm.

There was a series of stories in "Boys Life" magazine (back in the 1960s or so) about a boy with a talking worm. It was set in a 'redneck' part of the country. Adventures were not leading to the boy becoming POTUS.
