Some explorers “drown” but actually get to This underwater city. Perfect society, polyamorous, press palms with some substance to make love. This woman from earth adjusts okay but the men don’t. The elders in the city don’t die but instead have their essence/ spirits trapped in containers until they can inhabit another younger childlike body. The men eventually escape with two elders but are transported several decades into the past. The woman remains.

I’ve been searching for a while for this novel.
