(Found) 1970’s creature-from-the-depths library book prolly by popular author

I think I borrowed this from school library 1970s, the cover had an artistic drawing of a cave creature with big beady eyes; it was discovered near the ocean in a cave by a boy who befriended it. Later in the story there was something happening in tunnels that and I think the creature was maybe running out of time?

I did wonder about Emma Tupper's Diary by Peter Dickinson, which involves a monster in a cave and is from the right period, but the lead character is a girl and I'm not sure if she exactly befriends the creature.

Could it be Gerry Turner's Stranger from the Depths (1967)? You can see the cover via ISFDB. It has come up here before on a couple of occasions.
