(Found) Fissure eruption story

Short story, maybe brief novelette. Probably 1960s. Viewpoint character is in England, talking to American geologist. Geologist boasts how America has had huge fissure flow eruption which covered most of the western part.
Coincidentally later that day there is a "small" fissure eruption in England. Narrator is one of the few survivors.
 
There was a movie with a similar plot-- The Crack in the World (1965) "A dying scientist pushes forward his project to tap through to the Earth's magma layer, with results that threaten to destroy the Earth as we know it."

I believe the Fissure Eruption story was "The Thames Valley Catastrophe,", yes.
