Novel, probably 1970s.
The aliens wanted to infiltrate either Hong Kong or Singapore to study humans (I forget which of the two they chose).
There was a scene where they were just about to sterilize the Earth with a ray that disrupts the carbon bonds of organic molecules. The Captain reflected on this being the first time they had ever sterilized a planet, and contemplated the "mountains of flesh" the few surviving bacteria would have to consume (but I'm pretty sure there was a happy ending).
