Sci-fi dystopian novel about kid and robot (or was it an alien?) traveling by car cross country

I read this book when I was in middle school and forgot all about it until now... please help find it. I remember them being in a convenience store, looking for supplies, and gas been very expensive. It was my favorite novel at the time and I really want to reread it, thank you. It isn’t The Electric State, but it is very similar.
