(FOUND) Eighties Science Fiction Virus Book

Looking for name of a science fiction book I read in the eighties... it was about a plague, I think. A mans brother (I believe the man was a spy) blew up his own lab releasing something. The man found a pink worm, which grew into a woman and in the end became a virus that healed people of everything, including mental issues. I think the virus character was called alpha omega. I have searched exhaustively for years and never even have come close!!!!!
