Does this science fantasy story sound interesting?

I remember asking what people thought of the genre science fantasy. Surprisingly, the answers were very accepting and not judgmental like most places. So that encouraged me to, for the first time, post what kind of novel I was trying to write for years. Its a long read but I would appreciate anyone who read this passion project just so I will know if people actually give a crap about these kinds of stories. I thought they might because this place is all about sci-fi and fantasy.

In “Exfinitus Prime” (Not official Name) there are three kinds of planets, an ordinary planet with an ordinary orbit, an megastructure planet that generates beams of energy in their orbit that science can explain, and a mythical planet that produces supernatural essences in their orbit that science cannot and will never explain. The ordinary planet orbit in-between these two powerful and opposite planet and influence it just as the sun and moon influence the earth. And its always been that way. No species knows how this star system was made. Not even the oldest species that appeared.

As the species began to explore and venture out through this weird world, they’ve studied what the strange worlds do to their ordinary world. The megastructure world's light beams enhance the ordinary world so-to-speak. As some said: “When these light beams contact with our eyes, its as if this universe's secrets are revealed. So many geometrical objects and substances are seen that only highly evolved species eyes could see. Revealing the hidden structures of reality science leads to” The mythical world however is the definition of unpredictable. So unpredictable it is commonly accept to be something that doesn’t belong in their universe. When it contacts the ordinary planet, darkness engulfs almost everywhere, and the mythical world brings random supernatural force that cause chaos like its just saying random spells. As most species said, “This mysterious thing is not from this universe. I can’t be. Its very nature is to do the impossible without any scientific laws standing in its way. It is magic.” Think of a solar system with an ordinary planet in between a ring of light and dark with a world going around it.

Usually the ordinary planet contacts the megastructure and mythical planet in separate times in its orbit. But there are few times both the megastructure and mythical planets align. And when that happens, portals open thanks to their combined scientific and magic power. These annual portals that open up through the times of the worlds orbit and the interaction with the megastructure world and the mythical world influence the ordinary planet like seasons affecting the earth. The species that have emerged on the ordinary world begin using the abilities to discover different types of science and magic and how they fed the species desires. Some even migrated through the portals that were made with both the megastructure and mythical planets power and literally landed on to them and discovered something incredible. The megastructure planet and mythical planet was made by some great beings. While the species still don’t know how these great beings made these planets because it would be the equivalent of a cell asking a person something, they at least know that the great beings did. The megastructure planet was an artificial planet like giant machine left running by the great beings. The mythical planet they’ve discovered was actually alive which explains why it was so unpredictable and so magical. Many theorize that the mythical planet is a great being but they have no way of knowing that. They only know that its alive in a sense. So the closest answer the species came to about how this world was made was some great beings made these worlds. Most if not All left. But if the mythical planet is a great being, then at least a few stayed behind.

In time the hunt for discovering these worlds' origin died down and the species of the ordinary world began making inventions and spells. The species who favored the artificial worlds science made them develop their brains more and study the structures of the universe more. They contributed to that structure by making all kinds of inventions. The ones that favored the mythical world made magic come literally from their feelings and heart. Since no science can explain magic and therefore can’t contribute to the structure of reality, some species went out to the darkness of the worlds to exercise more magic and more complex made-worlds so-to-speak.

At the time, all species need both science and magic to live their lives. Humans were one of them and they needed both science and magic But then over the years, more species began to emerge. Not just on the ordinary planet, but also on the artificial and mythical planet. When the older species first contacted them, the native species gave different abilities that the older species thought were unique and could benefit their power. Both the users of science and magic thought these species powers would be the best to rule the ordinary world.

Then an issue began to rise. The species who favored science began to say the species controlling magic cannot use these new magical discoveries because it will ruin the ordinary world. But the species that favored magic have built a new culture with the species born on the mythical world and now have a practically unbreakable bond with them. The species who favored magic kept bringing the magic from the mythical world which began to anger the species who favored science. It got so bad that the species who favored science forcefully blocked any more entrance to the mythical world so no one could go there. This angered the species who favored magic and they blocked the path way to the artificial world against the species who favored science. They both demanded that they should unblock their bonds with the other worlds so the ordinary world can become more like their favored powers of science and magic. Neither of them complied to each others demands and began to fight one another over which power should dominate the ordinary world. The fighting soon turns into conflict and bloodshed. Then into a never ending war. While the species were fighting, the species that were trapped on the artificial world began to fight as well. Species that weren’t native to the artificial world began to go insane because they could not handle the extreme power of the artificial world and they began to fight everything making the species native to the artificial planet beginning to destroy them like a virus and even treating them like an actual virus because all they know is science. The species trapped on the mythical world however began to enslave its native inhabitants thanks to the pure magic of the mythical world giving extremely powerful feelings making the foreigners go mad with power. Cults were made and extremely demented creations became dominate.

This violent war lasted for centuries because of how much conflict inflicted every inch of aspect of life in these worlds. Despite the opposing powers prejudice against their enemy, there were still pieces in their lives that they could never be rid of that were products of the enemies side. But over the long centuries, the cycles of the planets ended some conflicts. Over time, no longer were species blocking portals for passages to enter but the war continued. While not as harshly, bloodshed was still being made and no one believes there is peace. Many more kingdoms have been made making conflict come from more directions.

But then something awakened. During the war some species found a deep secret. One that has never been discovered. During the carnage, many began to look back to the great beings that made these worlds about how they made the worlds and what they could learn to prevent carnage. While they still did not discover how these worlds were made, they have discovered something the great beings made. A third power. Something beyond science and magic. It is unknown why or how the great beings made this third power, but they’ve learned its power could make science and magic live together properly and not only end the forever war, but also make new discoveries that science and magic could not make. Many were thrilled to finally have a chance to end this war and experiment with a brand new power. But there were also many who were disappointed. Because if this new third power succeeded into making science and magic live together, there would still be conflict. This third power may cause the collapse of many kingdoms that lean more heavily on the extreme ends of science and magic. Those kingdoms, while flawed, still hold value. Value which would be lost if this third power rose. Species that can only survive the extreme ends of science and magic lives would collapsed. A more bloodier conflict could ensue.

As bloodshed from opposite forces reign, kingdoms stand tall never planning to be removed, and species develop and decline, a few small species follow the blueprints of a powerful being to build a new world with the third power.

Now before I ask if you think this sounds interesting, I will first address Clarke's third law: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” This phrase is driving me insane. Not that there's anything wrong with it. It sounds interesting and I will probably address it in the narrative. Its people who keep on using this phrase to dismiss this story. Every time I talk about having a story that has both science and magic people always say things like: “It's technically all science or magic so this setting doesn’t make sense” Or: “You’re overthinking it. Just have only science or only magic.” Or even: “Maybe you should write something else that is more fit for your experience.” Basically, they dismiss the story solely based on its genre.

Are these people serious? Have they ever read a single story in their lives? It's a story. With a setting. Conflict. Themes. Character. And this story’s I have a story to tell and I’m going to use both science and magic as two opposite forces to tell it. One of themes I wish to tackle is Objective Rational logic vs Subjective mythological emotion. Science is all about the facts of the world. Magic is all about the emotions of the world. I can use what ever I went to tell the story I want to tell. Who do these people think they are? Everytime I tried to hear peoples opinions about this story, they never criticize the actual story, or characters, or themes, they just criticize the genre about how pointless it is because there’s already fantasy and sci-fi. In other words, they’re criticizing it because its different from what they’re comfortable with and what they’re not familiar with. They say: “Its all technically magic no matter how scientific you make it.” Then I try to add more science elements to it and they say: “Yawn! Too nerdy. I don’t know science. Just make it completely fantasy.” I’m sick of people putting me in this lose-lose situation. And I’m sick of their hypocrisy. For all their talk about how pointless this subgenre is, they’re very comfortable loving other subgenres. Why? Because they’re familiar with it. It speaks to them in a way. Just because someone's not familiar with a genre doesn’t mean a story in that genre should be shunned. How many times have people belittled a story thinking it could never be a good narrative and then those very same people all of the sudden praising it because the story was good?

But is it? Does it sound interesting. I’m just trying to figure out what kind of audience likes these kinds of things.

Just write it. You clearly have enthusiam and energy, and loads of ideas. Believe me, you are going to need all of that to finish off a novel.

There are 7.6 billion people in the world, just because a few of them that you've talked to haven't liked what you've said about it...so what. There's plenty of other readers out there. Only one person needs to like the story, and that's the author.

If you are intent on a bestseller or a chance at getting into trad publishing... then yes, it might make a lot of sense to study the market, work out what most people want or might like...but if you are focused on your own vision, don't worry about anyone else at the moment!

Get on writing it and trying to make your prose as high quality as you can.

I would read a story that mixed science and magic. To be honest, I kind of skimmed your synopsis because that doesn't matter as much to me as the actual story: the prose, the characters, the pacing. Essentially, what determines whether I'll read a story is the skill of the author telling it and not just the basic story outline. You have an idea, that's great. Write it. Don't worry about people outside your head telling you that your idea won't work. If you have passion for it, you will make it work.

I read the beginning and skimmed the rest.

I find your concept interesting, however, what is the story? This sounds like all background world building stuff. Or is the story going to cover eons? You're going to build your audience based on the actual story and writing style more so than the specific subgenre.

I didn't read deeply past the first paragraph. However, I'm sure it's a GREAT set of world building notes, and is creative and unique. The way you get people to like it and enjoy it like you do is to have a story around it.

An important part of the story is not to reveal the whole cool world all at once, but slowly over the course of the story, as the characters and plot are also revealed.

While there is a section of readers who are ok reading science fiction that is structured like scientific writing most people are interested in the play between people/characters and the world ie. the story.

In order to understand the story itself, it would be better to read the ending rather than the beginning. The story(For-now. I might change it.) may be about a man who went to one of the planets because he heard rumors that some species on the planet found a way to end this never ending war between science and magic and to escape from his homeland because they hated him for his beliefs. Over his journey he thinks about how much trauma he suffered and thinks that he may be a bad person if all these bad things happened to him. While on his journey he tries both science and magic to cope with his trauma but they don't seem to work and wonders if its even possible to end his and everyone else's suffering.

I would edit it to cut some out but I can't for some reason.

Sorry, to be clearer: it doesn't matter WHAT world building notes you set out, the only way for me to give a usable reaction is to see your story. Seeing that you've taken the time to create detailed world building notes, I'm going to assume you are serious about world depth. This is all that is needed. Now, if your story is engaging depends on other things, like plot and characterization.

Some really good stories have been told about some pretty mundane things, and some pretty bad stories have been told about some pretty fantastically grandiose ideas.

The only way to find out where this falls on the spectrum is to write the actual story and see what other people think about it.

While I am interested in the cross genre world you've built, the particular story of a man getting over trauma and trying to stop a war would have no interest to me. I'm sure there are many out there who would be interested.

He's not trying to stop the war. How can he? He's one guy against battles between planets. He just trying to find peace for himself. And like I said, I might change it. There are plenty of stories that I'm thinking about using. This one was just an example that could be used for other things like a sub-plot or a backstory or something else.

Your world sounds interesting. I would read it if it had some great characters and a solid plot. I do think that rather than saying science will never explain the magic world, say that modern science cannot explain. Our science is based on laws and rules that apply to our world. The magic world will surely have laws and rules that apply to it, just ones we don't know and can't comprehend because it is not of our own, especially for things created with intention.

Forgive me but I don’t understand why what other people say of your idea is of any relevance to you at all.

It’s like Picasso getting angry with people who don’t like Guernica. So what? The point is you’re fired up and excited about your story. You don’t need validation or permission from anyone. It’s all subjective anyway.

For example, what would you do if everyone here had said ‘no; it’s a bad idea, don’t write it!’ You’d still write it, right?

Just focus on your character and your own wishes for the project would be my advice. :)

I'm not making an ordinary magic system that is just technical like technology. The story wouldn't work if their magic had laws. This kind of magic is a lot different. So many people told me the magic needs laws and I always respond saying this isn't the kind of magic people are used to. The magic in this story shouldn't have laws.

If the magic is in any way reproducible by the people wielding it, then it would inherently have some laws that apply to it, even if we don't know or understand it. Magic laws at bare minimum *to me* just mean if you do "X", then you consistently get "Y". But if the magic is erratic and unpredictable (sorry if you said so and I missed it), then ok.

Either way, it sounds interesting.

Instead of telling everyone what your story is, why don't you show them by writing it?

Calm down. I'm doing much more than just so-called telling my story, I'm trying find my audience. It will also affect my writing style. Saying a bunch of information doesn't mean I'm telling the story. I barely told you anything compared to what I actually wrote.

Where are you in the development process of the story? First draft? Revisions? Solicited feedback from critique partners?

What is your end goal for the story? Personal satisfaction? Self-publish? Traditional publish?

What is the form factor? Short? Novel? Epic series?
