One day I'll find the words.
I read this relatively short story, I don't even know how long ago, about a plague that ended the world. I believe I read it on The Gutenburg Archive so the story must be old or at least out of copywrite.
It's set from the perspective of an old man, the last one to have seen what things were like before the plague. The world has devolved into tribalism and there are very few humans left. If I remember correctly, there were only maybe 5 or 6 characters in the whole story. It ended with a confrontation between the old man and another man (I remember him being gruff and angry). They were basically fighting over a woman, the only woman that either of them had seen in years and years.
I cannot for the life of me remember the name, it was something like the red plague or the red death (not the poe one). Google searches of these terms throw up nothing. I don't remember it being sci-fi, so I think you can rule out most authors of that genre.
Please help, I want to read it again!
