Short story...couple decades or so ago.
For example, if the temperature (in Fahrenheit, so you know it was written by an American) was in the upper 60s, everyone's clothing morphed to bell bottoms with love beads. If it was in the low 20s all the cars became Ford Model T...that kind of thing.
