Intelligent ship, travels in a loop visiting all human colonies it had earlier seeded.
It does so secretly as its programming prevents it from interfering or revealing itself, but it found a loophole that lets it contact individuals and take them away as companions.
On one planet it's a young girl who survives by rooting through the trash at the spaceport.
On another planet, humans have completely isolated themselves from one another and communicate only via technology, no direct contact.
It's revealed later that the ship travels in time and this is why the ship knows that when it drops off the trash girl that she is going to die, because the knowledge is already in its memory from a previous loop through time.
Humanity from the various planets all think they are regular humans but some have undergone generations of mutations that leave them looking very little like humans.
Not sure on age of book, but thinking it's pre-1990.
Anyone have any idea?
