Can anyone identify this children's sf novel?

1/ Published in hardback in the UK no later than 1971
2/ Features a boy in a gold spacesuit who lands in the UK and is befriended by some schoolchildren
3/ Has a scene where a schoolteacher tells her pupils she believes in UFOs
4/ Has a scene with a river boat
5/ Not by a major author

Maybe The Boy Who Discovered the Earth by Henry Gregor Felsen (pub 1955)

I can't find any plot descriptions online but the hardcover edition has a boy in a space suit on it.
