Enjoyed the Shannara series

In the 80's was part of a book club and ordered the Elfstones of Shannara hardbound. Was so drawn into the book I actually sent Mr. Books a letter and surprise-surprise, I received a postcard back from him. I still have it!
 
I've been thinking about starting the Shannara series for a while now. I really enjoy Terry Brooks' writing, but haven't ventured outside of his Landover series yet (excluding Street Freaks and The Phantom Menance---I enjoyed both).
To begin with the Shannara series should I begin with his first book written for the series, The Sword of Shannara? Or should I begin with the prequels to Sword that he wrote later on?
