From around the 1980s (?). The "true present" was in the 15th Century and a sorcerer has created magic jewels that show alternate versions of the 20th Century, based on what decisions he makes as to what to do with the jewels. Our world is the one where he decides to destroy them.
A character in our world somehow ends up in the world where the wizard gives the jewels to the Church. It is a dystopic theocracy where New York is "The City of Saint Peter". Then the character meets the wizard, who is planning, based on his scrying, to create a secret society of wizards to use the jewels.
The title was something like "Worlds of the Seven Jewels".
