1950s or 1960s (I think). Short story.
A couple men are doing something (?) and end up with little box with a hole in it. One looks into hole and says there is a spinning ball in there. Other (the narrator) also looks in and sees it. First man looks in again and there is a BANG and his eye is blown out. He shouts "Put out my eye will you" and grabs poker from roaring fire and pokes it through the hole. Smoke comes out and when they look in again there is nothing.
A few days later a giant eye, the size of Eurasia, appears over the world for a few hours. Next day another equally large eye does the same thing. Then the first eye appears and the nations of the world, in a total panic, fire their thermonuclear arsenals into the eye.
The two men realize they had somehow put the Earth into a time-space warp and that in another day or two a red hot poker the size of the Pacific Ocean will descend on the planet.
I thought the title was something like "The Iith of Ooth" but googling that just gave me a magic trick.
