Howdy, folks. This is a pretty bustling community, it looks like. I'm a new/aspiring writer, but I've been writing for years now in a kind of bubble, not really participating in the scifi or writing communities, not really even aware of places like this. Just kinda hangin' out by myself on deployment and whatnot, lost in my own worlds. I figure since I'm finally getting around to thinking about maybe considering publishing one of these things, though, I should start making friends and stop being such a hermit. And why not bribe new friends with gifts? So, I figured I'd throw a few chapters of my latest project out there for free and see what people think.
Here's the deal: it's different. I know, everybody says that, but most everybodies aren't computer science majors writing stories about aliens while doing cool **** in the military IRL. (If that sounds like bragging... it is. My life's been pretty awesome. But the point is, I've been blessed to be able to write from a weird place, a natural introvert and nerd steeped in military dude-bro life and wild experiences.) So, this one's for those of you boys and girls that want your genres bent, like me. A lot of the military stuff is straight up real (I've got a certificate saying I didn't include anything classified), but the hero is a female CS grad student working on AI, and she's pretty real, too, if eccentric, so there's plenty in this one for the ladies. At least, the female readers in my immediate circle seem to like it and find her relatable. Also, the computer science and videogaming elements should be pretty on-target as well, because, y'know, that's me. And, yes, there's aliens. Cool aliens who would totally join your DnD campaign--if you'll join them in the galactic battle for freedom...
Anyway, I made a whole website and everything, and put the three excerpts up there. Come on over and check it out: Fantasy – Fantasy v Reality But remember, this is just a tease...
P.S.: I'd love to hear what people would like to see for promos. I think this will be a three parter. Should I do like most authors and make a mailing list or something? Maybe offer part 1 free to subscribers? Or, maybe I could offer to do custom short stories in the Independence universe for supporters or something. Anyway, read a bit, and if you like it, tell me what kind of promo scheme would get you excited. Publication will probably be ebook/POD here in the next month or two.
Cheers, and, y'know, well met!
