I recall reading a short story back in the early to mid 80's in a school text book for a fiction class. The premise was there was a ship, I believe it was sentient or at least parts of it were and it somehow had a boy aboard it. They called him the new "pusher" signifying he was an engine of some sort. The other parts were the "seer" which was an eye type creature and so forth. I only remember those details and think it was loosely related to Flight of the Navigator, but I think this was different.
