It seems that NASA astronauts start decompressing 24 hours before a space walk to prevent the bends -- nitrogen bubbles in the blood stream. Sort of throws a kink into all those stories where someone throws on a suit and immediately goes out the airlock.
Additional info: Decompression time can be reduced to 2-3 hours by breathing pure oxygen prior to a space walk.
