Does anybody use this site? I've only just come across it. I guess it's kinda like Wattpad where you post your story and other people read it. The whole point of writing, for me, other than I feel like I can't not, is to have other people read my stories. And as anything other than my gay romance stuff seems to have a hard time getting published, I decided to post some of my older stuff on there. So I've started by posting bits of TBM (I can't be bothered to explain what that is, older members might remember - it's something I wrote way back in 2012). (Here's a link: The Beautiful Man (Supernatural) | Royal Road)

Seems to be a fairly interesting site. There's a forum. I asked if it was a place where you only got reads and reviews if you did likewise and apparently it's not.

Thoughts? Also, if anybody would like to read my stuff on there, please do so. :D

Making an account has been on my to-do list for some time. I hope it is as promising as it looks.
I'll keep an eye on your account for sure.

I hope so too. Thanks!

I looked at it a while back and the main impression I came away with was that it had a bias towards RPG-style fantasy and is completely orientated toward episodic writing released on a regular schedule and I just don't write like that.

Yeah I noticed that LitRPG and something else beginng with 'I' that I also had to Google seems to be the most popular thing there and I'm not quite sure what either of those two things are. However, I figured I'd give it a go and see. I don't think it's episodic. You just post chapters whenever you like. As I'm posting something I'd already written and finished years ago, I'm just randomly posting chapters whenever. I'm just scheduling a few now, too, in case I forget/can't be arsed. According to their 'tips' it's best to post randomly so you catch all sorts of timezones.

I hope you get a lot of readers out of it, Mouse. But I'm quite surprised there are so many people happy to read novels in serialised format, especially now we've all become used to being able to binge whole TV series.

Usually when I learn of something being published as episodes, I tell myself I'll read them all at the end -- and then often as not forget. I know some people have the same attitude (perhaps minus the forgetting) to epic fantasy series.

To be honest, I'd rather read something that was available in its entirety too. But we'll see what happens.

Well I think it's definitely 'publication', so it is something of a bridge burner putting your work up there.
I wouldn't put my best material on it because it would be dead commercially but I might write work specially for it as a marketing strategy.
On the other hand looking at the 'YA fantasy' heavy listings on the main site I don't think it would be for me stylistically but I will look a bit deeper.
To be honest (dinosaur alert! ) I have a view of the industry that is naively stuck in 1998 (reading books on telephone screens will never catch on) so good on you for pushing yourself into the new era. I watch with interest and await education on the ways of the contemporary world :)

This is why I'm putting old stuff up. Maybe if I feel like it at some point I might write something specifically for it, but we'll see how we go first.

I hope so too. Thanks!

Realistically, with things like this, try it and see is probably the best approach.

(I suspect my negative reaction is partly driven by my distinctly unsatisfactory experience with Wattpad. :censored:)

I'm on Royal Road (I go under the username 'Rilaiss' there), but I haven't started posting anything yet. I'm planning on using it in conjunction with my Patreon to post chapter drafts on for a couple of my projects, but I'm waiting to do so until I have a certain number of chapters written and shared with patrons first. I'm only going to share unedited chapter drafts though as I want to save the finalized/prettied up version for when I self-publish. Hoping it will help build some interest in it before official release (plus get a little feedback) and maybe even direct a few to become patrons. It's worked really well for some, so figured it was worth a try.

I often think of Ambrose. Also @AnyaKimlin ’s characters. Be good to see it getting out there

Do you? Aw thanks! :giggle:

I'm following you on there now. I'm EmmyJL

I haven't heard of it, but will go and check it out. And @Mouse yay for getting Ambrose out there. I love that story.
Thank you, you're too kind!

Interestingly, I decided to put up my old self-pubbed YA fantasy too. That got a follower after posting only two chapters. TBM has zero followers but has had more reads (supposing it is reads from people and not just views from bots) but then I have more chapters posted of that.

It's a bit confusing, as in it lets me click on stories I've followed but not people. (I can even find a list of people I've followed.) Unless I'm not looking in the right places... Otherwise, layout is nice and clean, I like that.

I got puzzled and found a response on one of the Royal Road forums that says you can't see your followers and the only follows I can see are Mouse's books, not the actual users I've followed.

I will go away puzzled.
