I am trying to understand without any spoilers from those who have read the book, is it a boring book about how to start a business in a fantasy setting or is there more to it?

There is more to it. I wouldn't recommend reading it if you haven't read Shadow of a Dark Queen. Rise of a Merchant Prince carries on Rupert Avery's story.
It has been a number of years since I read it but I did enjoy it.
