Hi all

I started to read this book in the 70s. It was a paperback and my Grandfather was outraged by me reading a 'penny dreadful' and tore it up.

The main character somehow is aware of what is happening to his fellow explorers, even though he had to stay on Earth.

I hope this is enough to track it down.

No. Not a Heinlein, sorry. But you're right, there are similarities.

The aliens doing the eating looked like 'giant cockroaches'. Somehow the person that has some psychic ability triggered by caffeine. Lucky them; I use it to lubricate my eyelids.

Mm. Not Anne McCaffrey's Restoree, even though there are other similarities. No psychic coffee.

Is this something like Neal Ashers Polity series?

Although I think the Aliens are more like huge crabs?

I hope this gets identified, I wanna read about cockroach aliens eating people!
you forgot the psychic coffee... then again some people are psychos if they don't have their coffee so... psychic coffee... do you think people would have pitched battles in starbucks?

I remember my Grandad having a similar attitude whenever he saw me reading sci-fi, "Why are you reading rubbish about little green men? That won't help you in life"
