Post-plague, set in the UK?

A book I read in the 70s. There's been a plague of some sort - it's not Day of the Triffids.

I remember one character being gay and another called Mary.

Quite possible it's not worth remembering, of course.

A little more detail if possible. Lots of these sorts of novels.
Depopulation?
Disease?
Fear of machines?
Set in any particular part of the UK?
Rural?
Urban?
Political?
Military?
 
I want to say it was in a city, in the immediate aftermath. I have a memory of one of the characters chasing a car full of survivors shouting 'I'm alive'.

Sorry, that's about as much as I've got.

I rather like post-apocalyptic fiction, so I'd be keen to revisit.
