This has been driving me nuts... When I was a boy in the 1970s or early 1980s I read a book where the main character underwent a bunch of surgeries, changing his skin, his eyes and even removing his privates in order to be the first astronaut on Mars. I recall him being able to see his wife's body temperature change through his new eyes, and thus discovered her infidelity. I remember dust getting in his battery pack and making him go crazy, briefly. It was very challenging to read and I thought it had been written by Pohl Anderson (as I recall the spelling, though it seems to be Poul). I've looked at all the books written by Poul, and none of the titles rings a bell.
