Up the clum

My late father was a great fan of this - having been driving old cars that did 15 to the gallon.

Don't ever be tempted to turn off your engine and coast down hills.
You will lose vacuum to the brake servo with immediate and catastrophic consequences

Father used to de-clutch and roll down hills and part way up the next in neutral - which my driving instructor firmly told me was illegal because it was dangerous.

Turning off the engine can also lock the steering if you turn the key a fraction too far .....

I do that.

And I'll vouch for that too. Not something I will do again.

I remember seeing a documentary, probably on channel 5, about Britain's meanest man. Apparently to save money whilst on holiday in Spain he used to turn off the engine when driving down hill, the steering lock came on and he ended up in a Spanish ditch.
