Trying to find a series of books I read in the 90's. I recall the plot is centred around a civil war era American cavalry unit being transported into another dimension. They come across a new species of really tall non human warriors who identify as clans and tribes. I remember being enthralled by these books and would love to read them again. But try as I may I can't recall the author or titles.

That sounds like William Forstchen's Lost Regiment series.
