Somewhere on this mortal coil.
Years ago I remember watching a series or film on the TV, where people entered each others dreams. I can't remember the name of it. In places it was quite scary, yet it had an odd feel to it.
It was either on bbc one or two as there were no adverts.

There was a movie in the 80's called Dreamscape which had Dennis Quade able to enter dreams. He goes up against an excellent David Patrick Kelley who is trying to kill the president.

Actually a very good movie.

I said this in another thread on Chrons:
I have always enjoyed fiction about dreams and the "invasion" of dreams via technology etc. I'm thinking of the film Inception, and an older film Dreamscape, and the recent Jasper Fford book, Early Riser. I think it is a subject for science fiction stories that has much more scope than has been presently delved into.
Inception is a Hollywood blockbuster mainstream film but it wasn't first.
Dreamscape has a thread in Films: Dreamscape (1984)
Early Riser is well worth a read.

This is the TV general discussions. So was it Dreamscape you were thinking of or was there actually a TV series about 'dream invasion' because I would want to watch it too?

Is there anything else in any media?

I've only watched the first episode of Maniac. It isn't obvious that dreams have anything to do with it yet. This gives it a plus for me, probably more so if I didn't know already. I would have said an alternative reality, except for the drug trial.

Maniac is a very good series. Thanks for the pointer to it. I've binge watched it and I'm up to episode 9. It doesn't look like they were dreaming at the very start now, it's just set a little into the future. (It was the buying friends, AdBuddy and Statue of Infinite Liberty that made me think that.)

Reviews online say it is like Inception and like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. To me, it feels more like a Black Mirror story. I love the weirdness, but this is also very funny, especially the elf quest and mafia family dreams (the urinating diamonds and electric drill parts of those), and also the "gaming" addiction, and the séance party dream too. I didn't expect so much great comedy.

This thread has nagged at my memory since I first read and finally at lunchtime it clicked there was a TV show back in the late 90's called Sleepwalkers that had a group of people enter other peoples dreams and they would fight their nightmares.

EDIT> Sleepwalkers was in 1997

"A high-tech team of dream researches uses experimental computer technology to enter peoples' dreams and nightmares and help them deal with their subconscious issues there."

Theres this:

An episode of Sliders where "DreamMasters" could use psychotropic drugs to invade the dreams of ordinary people. I remember it being a bit disturbing as a kid.

I agree, it definitely doesn't feel similar to those two films, especially inception. I'm glad you are enjoying it! I remember cracking up at the scene in ep 8
when Owen tries to find Annie as a hawk. "Annie i'm a hawk!"
It was so perfectly weird and bizarre.

So, I'm about to start to watch... "Sandman" is coming to Netflix...
from the Neil Gaiman graphic novels. I guess these meet the criteria for 'dream invasions.'

And the inspiration by the 1950's song by The Chordettes.

BTW Is he called 'the Sandman' because he leaves behind those little grains of "sleep" in the corner of your eye?
Is he an American folklore thing? Or was he taken there from somewhere else in Europe?

It's European folklore. Terry Pratchett had a version too, though it was implied that his used bags of sand to knock people out.
