What are Your Thoughts on Disney's Ownership of the Marvel And Star Wars Franchises ?

One thing I'd like to see in the Star Wars films is a samurai style movie.
Not off saving the Galaxy but along the lines of The Seven Samurai or Yojimbo with Jedi defending the "villagers".
I think many of Akira Kurosawa's films would work in the Star Wars context. Maybe it's because the Light Sabres make me think of Katana.
I don't see the TV shows so this may have been done already.

I've got a book about the designs for The Mandalorian, and apparently the episode "The Jedi" in Season 2 was explicitly supposed to be a samurai story. I'm surprised that Star Wars hasn't gone all-in on this, as the Jedi remind me of a mixture of samurai and the more "magical" kung fu films.

One of my thoughts about the beyond-excellent Andor was that it benefitted greatly from the classic Star Wars elements (Tie-fighters, Stormtroopers etc) being used so sparingly (but also so well). One reason I didn't like the prequels and am not interested in lots of the Disney stuff is that Jedi seem almost to be the default class of person. (Plus none of their enemies seemed to realise that their blaster-deflection powers are useless if you shoot from multiple sides at once, which was just dumb as ****.) The idea of a lone samurai-like Jedi figure in an otherwise Andor-like world is very appealing. (But not Kenobi, someone new.)

I agree. The jedi are sometimes the equivalent of the space marines in Warhammer: overpowered poster children who are often the least interesting aspect of the setting. It's a bit like those fantasy games where the solution to being locked in a prison is just to cast the spell of opening on all the doors: the lack of super-powers can make the story much more dramatic.

Type "bandai star wars samurai" into google image search.

Surely the connection has long been well known

And even hereabouts, it’s been mentioned in Star Wars threads for over twenty years

Lucas originally wanted to do Flash Gordon.

It's weird (and maybe creatively incestuous which isn't surprising) but a little better than using Cillian Murphy as some have suggested.
He is the last person I think of as the Doctor Doom type.

Joseph Culp was a decent Doctor Doom. Despite some script issues--he had the right attitude and voice (although shouldn't he have an accent? I never see him depicted with an accent but isn't he from some made-up Eastern European territory? Morovia? Too lazy to look it up).
They consider RDJ the MVP of the MCU but I think Hugh Jackman is--he has the most marquee value as a leading man. Now I hear they are going to use him in Secret Wars.
I agree with the Critical Drinker--he said all these alternate universe stories mean death isn't a big deal because they can always bring them back as some other dimensional version. You can't be that invested in the stories since there are no real stakes.

Well in t the Flash you Brand Routh play Superman and Ray Palmer at the same time and and Tyler Hoelchlin also playing Superman and you even John Wesley Sip playing two different version of the Flash..:)

I've no problem at all with him playing a completely different character. It wouldn't work in any other series I don't think; imagine Tom Baker coming back as Davros? But in the MU it just feels fine.

I think Robert Downey jr could play Dr Doom without asking a beat .

As Davros, there only one other actor who could play Davros Martin Short. :D

Yeah but isn't that tv?
We usually say that the cinema experience is more epic. I don't care that they play around with the characters--but I think it shows how incestuous and cannibalistic it is getting because they can't find anyone with a name that they can add into it. They are burning bridges behind them because stardom is so much harder to groom now.
No doubt there are unknown exciting actors who could make an interesting Doom (that's how Reeve and Jackman were discovered) but they don't want to risk it.
Imagine if they said Clint Eastwood was playing Doom! The media buzz over that.
But we are at the point where they could do the CGI Deep Fake approach.

Humphrey Bogart is Doctor Doom!
It may come to that.

LIke reboots , remakes and doing films that have built in audiences . Hollywood tends to play it safe and stick with what works and picking an actors with a good box office history. Honestly in this case , I think I can buy into Robert Downey Jr playing Dr Doom .

Well it's not the worst idea--and they both wear masks so it is a little interesting but personally, I don't think he has the voice for it . I never liked the choice of Josh Brolin for Thanos either--I don't think he has the gravity in voice to make that part as interesting or dramatic as it could be. Some actors just have voices that are so intense--Michael Ironside for example. We are at a point now--where every actor is Lon Chaney Sr. They can play any part. It doesn't matter about degree or performance grading.
I am big believer in casting to type. You get stronger performances than if you experiment.
But since they will likely make Doctor Doom into a joking guy--then it may make perfect sense.

I hear Chris Evans is being considered to play the Human Torch.

Doom has a disfigured face so maybe the makeup will help us forget he was Iron Man.

This debate reminds me of Laurence Olivier and what he said to Dustin Hoffman (who had allegedly gone 72 hours without sleep because that’s what his character did). Olivier said, ‘My dear boy, why don’t you just try acting?’

If Downey is a good enough actor, it shouldn’t matter any previous part he played. Whether he is or not remains to be seen.

Do you think he has the chops to play a man in an armored suit?
