(Found)High/Epic Fantasy about some Dark Sorcerer

Hey folks,

I'm trying to find a high/epic fantasy novel I had read around 10 years ago (eBook). I don't remember much about it, but here goes.

Description: A boy lives in a castle on an isolated province/island. The ruler of the island has adopted him I think. He romances the princess for a while, but neither are really interested in each other. He later goes off to another land, probably through a dimensional rift, to explore his magical abilities (can't remember what they are though, maybe teleportation is one, in-world and between worlds). He becomes a mighty black sorcerer or something and uses his powers for doing good. He marries a local woman there and has a few kids. He then returns to the world in which he was born, and helps out his home province in the world war that rages (the war is good vs. evil I think).

There's more to it, but I stopped reading after that point. I vaguely remember because the focus had shifted from the main character to someone else. I'd greatly appreciate the name of the book. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like Raymond E Feist's Magician, first book in the Rift War Saga. Pug was his name in his homeworld in the other dimension it's Milamber.

Ah yes, that's the one. Thank you so much! I have it in my list but dismissed it thinking I knew the plot, but I mistook it for Lev Grossman's Magicians. Thanks again!

Sounds like Raymond E Feist's Magician, first book in the Rift War Saga. Pug was his name in his homeworld in the other dimension it's Milamber.

Kelewan is a lot more interesting that Midkemia.

Now if I remember correctly wasnt there a character called James? Or was it Jimmy? Or Dashel? Or Jimmy?

OK first series, Jimmy the hand, a member of the mockers (thief guild). He helped Athura and Anita escape Krondor. When Athura became Prince of Krondor, he found Jimmy and made him squire James to the court.

Jimmy married Gamia, Pug's daughter.
Eventually after many, many years, he was made Duke.

James sons or grandsons ( think grandsons as his son i'm pretty sure was named after Athura) James and Dashiel, one became leader of mockers
In the later years , after Jimmy's death, we are introduced to his grandson ( great grandson?) who although a noble could pass as street rat.

I was pointing out to them being basically the same character played generationally.

For all his faults though (like forgetting the King was dead) I do love Feist.
