It's a Small World - the modelling thread.

I told an old friend about this thread and he was very keen to register with Chrons so he could participate here, but says for some reason his email address came out as 'banned' when he tried to register.
Issue resolved thanks to Moderators. (Many thanks mods).

It’s typical that when I finally make a choice on rigging width (for choice, read guess) that it’s out of stock. Instead, I’ve ordered the same diameter rigging from a different manufacturer (Caldercraft). I’ve never heard of them so did some digging. Here’s an example of some of their wares. They seem to be highly regarded so I’m hoping that this rigging should be de rigeur ;)

Yikes!
Went to buy the rigging tools - £6 plus £13 Fedex delivery or £229 Fedex overnight delivery.
I never thought I'd say this but I'd be cheaper buying from Amazon and paying their postage (£4)

I hate it when firms do that. I buy specific ship models pre-cut wooden decking, which is usually made in China, and I'm always wary of significantly cheaper ones for precisely that reason. I've seen postage quoted at 5 or 6 times the actual cost of the deck in question.

I painted some very old metal Eldar robots. Not the most dynamic models, but I like the colours.

That particular design always makes me think of Giger aliens in uniform.

I've been going through the build instructions for the Cutty Sark and I've finally noticed a very small section giving the rigging requirements. It turns out I need 17 metres to make the shrouds and a few more metres for everything else. It's going to work out that it costs a lot more to buy all those extra materials than it did to buy the actual model kit. Add to that the cost of the paint I've already shelled out for and I'm starting to wish I'd never started this one.

17 metres? You didn't buy the 1:1 scale kit, did you?

So if the scale is around 1:100 17m suggests quite a good deal!
You're pretty close. Scale is 1:130:)
Also worth noting that, because of the way you make the rigging, there's a lot of wasteage. I just hope that's factored into the instructions.

And of course in modelling you don't have to have all the coils of handling rope at the end of all the sheets and lines.

I was having a look at the spool of rigging thread I bought last month. There’s no indication of how much is there but the price (£5.56 ) is also quoted as 56pence per metre. My arithmetic tells me that I’ve got just under 10 metres so I’ve ordered another spool and that should give me enough for the shrouds and ratlines (I believe this is the proper name for the bits of rigging sailors climb up and down….or pirates with knives between their teeth:D).
