I recently came across this website: enzmannarchive dot org/enzmann-starships/. I'm sure Enzmann intended this as science fiction but he seems to have developed the idea to an extraordinary degree.

See. e.g. Enzmann starship - Wikipedia. Apologies if this has already been discussed. I looked but failed to find any threads.

Interesting, @tinkerdan; thank you. I need to read this properly but at the moment I'm mystified about why we need millions of tonnes of propellant if the vessel is fusion-powered. (The snippet that sparked my interest actually said 'fission' but same applies.) E = M.c^2 means you can get all the energy you need from a miniscule quantity of the 'fusible' material. It's interesting, too, that the spacecraft in 2001: SO uses a very similar design. Wonde if Enzmann was one of Clarke's heros.
