For ten years or so I have used a kitchen caddy for food waste recycling.
Normally, by weeks end, bread, orange peel and such have a delightful thin turquoise surface film of mold. Fine, no worries.
For the past couple of months that has all changed and a very rapid growing grey furry mould grows and fills the caddy by the end of the week. It's quite horrible compared to out old friend.
This is after 4 days

Has anyone else noticed this sudden change of dominant species?

You throw away old bread and orange peel?

Old stale bread = bread pudding in my house. Soaked, mashed up, add egg and chopped dried - or not so dried - fruit. cook in slow oven. Orange peel is marmalade... or candied peel to put in the bread pudding. Some of the best marmalade I make is just peel (and sugar) and a bit of water. Boil it till it sets. Thick dark and chunky. Keep the peel in the freezer till you have enough to make it worth bothering with.
